Fishing
Crom Estate is ideally suited to a fishing break in Co Fermanagh.
You can make your own arrangements with the National Trust and fish
for pike in the Green Lake or for trout, perch or bream in Lough
Erne itself. If you are a beginner you can wander down to the White
Bridge and chance your luck.
Set in the North West, with its multitude of lakes and rivers,
Crom is within easy reach of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Tyrone and
North Mayo; where some of Ireland's best fishing is to be found.
Whether you're drifting wild loughs, or winter piking, Crom Castle
is ideal for fishing breaks throughout the year. Spring salmon,
wild brown trout, grilse, sonaghan and dollaghan are the quarry
of the game angler, while there are pike, bream, and perch for the
coarse fisherman.
The year opens with the January spring salmon fishing on the river
Drowse - cold work and often with little reward. Then into February
to troll for springers on Lough Melvin, through to March when the
trout season opens. And with the warmer weather, the fisherman's
choices widen. The prolific Finn in Donegal begins its fishing,
together with many other rivers where the salmon run. April, May
and June bring, some say, the best of the wild brown trout when
dapping the Mayfly could be a new experience. The grilse are now
well into the rivers and should the weather allow, sport can be
good. July and August are sometimes called the dog days - but they
still provide good opportunities when fishing early and late in
the day. September and October, with all their autum colors, bring
improved trout fishing, and the late salmon can be a bonus; or the
sonaghan fishing on Melvin may be more fun. Finally, why not end
your year with a dollaghan or two from one of Lough Neagh's feeders?
